Holy Father heads to Portugal, and humour in dark times

POPE Benedict XVI will arrive in Portugal today for a four-day visit

During the Papal visit he is due to celebrate open-air Masses in Lisbon, the capital, as well as at the Catholic shrine of Fatima, and in Oporto. While at the Fatima shrine on May 13, the day that marks the 93 anniversary of first sighting of the Blessed Virgin Mary there, he will celebrate a Mass and take part in a torch light procession.

In a country where the populations is 88 per cent Catholic, the Holy Father is expected to address Europe’s spiritual and economic crisis.

Carlos Azevedo, the auxiliary bishop of Lisbon, said that the Pope will speak about the joy of faith and hope.

“The moral values guiding the economy and politics show that there is a spiritual crisis,” he said.

Local Church official say they also expect the Holy Father will refer to child sex abuse by priests.
