Prayers for Polish community

Polish President Lech Kaczynski

OUR thoughts go out to Poland and Scotland’s Polish community following the death of Polish president Lech Kaczynski and 95 others— including political, military and religious leaders—in a plane crash in Russia on
Saturday.

Prayers were said for the dead and Cardinal Keith O’Brien addressed the congregation in at St Mary’s Cathedral in Edinburgh yesterday.

A congregation of around 300 people from the Polish community gathered together at St Simon’s Catholic Church near Partick Bridge in Glasgow for a special service on Sunday.

Prayers were said at St Peter’s Catholic Church in Glasgow on Saturday afternoon.

Among the dead was Mgr Bronislaw Gostomski, a parish priest at St Andrew Bobola Roman Catholic Church in west London.

His parishioners and the UK’s Polish ambassador Barbara Tuge-Erecinska honoured him over the weekend with at special services at his church in Shepherd’s Bush.

The president and the group traveling with him had been due to attend a memorial for a Second World War massacre when their plane crashed near Smolensk on Saturday.

Russian officials say the pilots were warned that they were flying too low.
