Pope’s letter to Irish Catholics due tomorrow

POPE Benedict XVI has said that he will sign his Pastoral Letter to the faithful of Ireland tomorrow and send it immediately.

“As you know, in recent months, the Church in Ireland has been severely shaken by the crisis of child abuse,” the Holy Father told pilgrims during his general audience at the Vatican on St Patrick’s Day.

“As a token of my deep concern, I have written a pastoral letter to address this painful situation. I will sign it on the Solemnity of St Joseph, guardian of the Holy Family and patron of the universal Church, and send it immediately. I ask that you read it yourselves, with an open heart and in a spirit of faith. My hope is that it can help in the process of repentance, healing and renewal.”

Cardinal Seán Brady, Archbishop of Armagh and Primate of All Ireland, welcomed the announcement.

In his homily yesterday the Cardinal said: “Ireland and its people have much to be proud of.

“Yet every land and its people have moments of shame.

“Dealing with the failures of our past, as a country, as a Church, or as an individual is never easy. Our struggle to heal the wounds of decades of violence, injury and painful memory in Northern Ireland are more than ample evidence of this.”
