Papal visit itinerary announcement imminent

EXCITEMENT is building with an official announcement on details of the Pope Benedict XVI’s visit to Scotland imminent.

The Holy Father has confirmed he will visit Scotland and England later this year and details of his itinerary are expected this month.

As many within and out with the Catholic community eagerly await the Pope’s arrival, news today of opposition to his visit leaves a sour taste.

The National Secular Society is due to hand a petition protesting against the Papal visit to Britain later into Downing Street today.

The petition states: “We the undersigned, petition the Prime Minister to ask the Catholic Church to pay for the proposed visit of the Pope to the UK and relieve the taxpayer of the estimated £20 million cost.”

The society says that 28,000 people have now signed its petition.

Cross Wires highlight on Monday that a counter petition had begun stating: “We, the undersigned, welcome, with all our hearts and souls, the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United Kingdom, for the liberty and well-being of the church in our country and most especially for the spiritual benefits and pastoral care to be offered to all, whatever their beliefs.”

Here is a reminder of where to find it.
