We need the Catholic press

Welcome to Cross Wires, the new Scottish Catholic Observer newspaper blog. Cross Wires aims to shine a light on the key issues and breaking news between weekly editions of the SCO so look in regularly for updates. You will find facts, opinion, analysis and plenty of food for thought.

HAVE you ever wondered why we need the Catholic press? Imagine news-gathering like a game of Chinese whispers. The further you get from the source, the less likely you are to hear the unfiltered original statement.

Look no further than reports in the secular media this week on the Scottish Bishops’ ad limina visit to Rome.

The Scotsman splashed with the headline ‘Sectarian Scotland Attacked by Pope’ but quickly countered with an the insightful Professor John Haldane’s ‘This is Pope Benedict’s real message to Scotland.’

It was hard to miss the tone of Magnus Linklater’s ‘Pope’s argument in defence of Catholic schools is bizarre’ article in The Times.

The message was also mixed abroad.

‘Pope worries about Scottish support for euthanasia,’ The Washington Post proclaimed.

Even well-meaning Catholic publications overseas don’t see the whole picture:

‘Catholic teaching is not a list of ’no’s,’ pope tells Scottish bishops’

The lesson learned here is that the local Catholic press is a vital tool in looking at the bigger picture, in context, with comment and analysis.
